Finbarr Lucas

Finkfurniture is the brainchild of Finbarr Lucas, whose training in both furniture-making and fine art gives a unique edge to his designs. Whilst working in South-East Asia he found himself afflicted with a kind of insomnia caused by designing furniture in his head.

"As soon as I returned I was boiling to get started, and with help from the Prince's Trust I was soon able to leave my part-time teaching job and launch Finkfurniture as a full-time concern."

Now in our seventh year, we look forward to another year of continued growth.

Environmental Concerns

We believe that it is our choice how we interact with the environment. Even the smallest business can make a difference with a responsible approach in its practices. We take care to behave in an ethical manner, especially regarding the following issues...

Wood Sourcing

Wherever possible we source our timber locally. We source timber and sheet products such as plywood from FSC certified suppliers, that is, from sustainably managed forests. We also use reclaimed wood, such as joists from demolished buildings.

Other Materials

Our varnish comes from ECOS, and is the purest varnish on the market. Our glue is almost exclusively PVA, a non-toxic substance. We give our wood waste to friends with wood-burning stoves, to use to heat their homes.

Power

The electricity for both the workshop and the office is supplied by Ecotricity, the only electricity supplier to actively build wind-farms in the uk.

Transport

When we're not on our bicycles, the petrol for the company vehicle is bought from Murco whenever possible, the supplier which the Ethical Consumer Foundation rates as the best choice in fuel.

Tree 37

Tree 37 was a large beech in Whiteley Wood, in sad decline. In Feb 2006 the tree was felled, with a demonstration of the diversity of uses from a single tree.

We made shelves and a table with just part of that tree.

Credits

Most of the on-site photos of kitchens, cupboards and so forth were taken by Matt Robson, the studio shots of the KFC sculptures were taken by Nigel Barker, and Alice Hardman also added some photos.

Thanks to all my friends and family who have supported me in endless ways over the years, and thank you for visiting this site.
